Course outline – a structured foundation

The 12-day course, run over 12 months, covers all aspects of implant dentistry and has been designed to fulfil the requirements of the GDC/FGDP Training Standards in Implant Dentistry (2016) that any dental practitioner carrying out implant dentistry in the UK should undertake before embarking upon patient care in this discipline.

Having trained over 1,000 dentists, Ucer Education understands the important role mentoring plays for those starting out in implant dentistry. Under expert supervision delegates undergo a series of lectures by renowned speakers, seminars, tutorials and hands-on practical sessions including a Clinical Day using the Straumann® Dental Implant System. Delegates also undertake literature reviews, learn the surgical and restorative principles of implant dentistry and perform live surgical procedures and restorative stages of treatment, all under the supervision of dedicated mentors.

Course modules

Covering everything from basic surgical techniques, patient assessment, treatment planning, advanced hard and soft tissue techniques, bone grafting through to laboratory and technical procedures, our multi-technique teaching approach ensures a fully rounded learning opportunity. The curriculum fulfils all the learning objectives necessary to prepare a candidate looking to undertake further postgraduate education such as the Diploma in Implant Dentistry RCS Ed, MSc in Dental Implantology or MSc in Digital Dentistry. The course provides a revision day for those who intend to sit the PG Dip in Implant Dentistry examination at RCS Ed.

This course conforms to Association of Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) consensus guidelines produced by the ADEE 1st and 2nd Pan European workshops in undergraduate and postgraduate education in implant dentistry (2008, 2014) and the FGDP/GDC Training Standards in Implant Dentistry (TSID 2012 & 2016).

This course complies with GDC verifiable CPD requirements (for 60 hrs verifiable CPD in Total).

Course completion

On completion of your training you will be able to:

  • Develop clinical skills and experience by placing and restoring implants at our ICE Mentee School of Implant Dentistry in Salford Quays, in conjunction with experienced and trained local mentors who will be introduced from a wide network of regional mentors.
  • Treat patients, provided by the Mentee School or your own patients (by prior arrangement).
  • Develop skills in using ground-breaking new techniques which have been recently introduced such as the a-PRF autologous growth factors and simplified bone grafting including Botiss Bone Ring and allograft CBCT Bone Builder techniques. The revolutionary full CBCT and IOS based Digital Workflow and minimally invasive computer guided surgical implant placement including Navident navigation surgery, will be taught by experts at the ICE National Reference Centre for Digital Dentistry.
  • Develop and enhance your clinical skills, complete your personal development and clinical portfolio in implant dentistry and prepare to sit the Pg.Dip in Implant Dentistry exam at RCS Ed.

FAQs

What does the MDIC Certificate Course entail?

The GDC has stipulated that UK graduate dentists should complete a structured postgraduate course in implant dentistry followed by formal assessment before undergoing clinical training under the supervision of a mentor (TSID/FGDP, 2016). As a first step towards gaining the required clinical competence in implant dentistry, the Manchester Dental Implant Certificate (MDIC) course provides the necessary theoretical education to fulfil these requirements. At the second stage, after completion of the theoretical education, the trainee implant dentist progresses to structured weekly/monthly clinical training by treating patients provided by the Mentee School under the supervision of a trained mentor. Whilst the Masters courses are heavily based on theory, the MDIC Certificate course puts the main emphasis on actual clinical training. The trainees develop their competence by treating a variety of cases under different scenarios at the Mentee School, yet avoid making mistakes by working under the close supervision of their mentors.

What tangible benefits do you gain at the end of the course?

After the first stage, the learner gains a Certificate in Implant Dentistry. On completing the clinical training at the Mentee School and a full portfolio of cases, the trainee receives a certificate of competence in implant dentistry and is coached and tutored to sit the prestigious PG Diploma examination at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Some trainees then progress to gain an MSc in Implant Dentistry by extending their studies.

How many patients does the course provide?

There is no limit to the number of patients/cases a learner can complete during the clinical training stages, although typically most mentees place and restore a minimum of 10 implants. If desired, the attendance at the Mentee School can be extended on a monthly basis until the mentor and mentee are happy that full clinical competence has been achieved.

What are the course fees?

The Certificate course fee is £550 per month (12-month course). Mentee School fee is £650 per month (x 10 months; no other expenses involved in treating patients under supervision).

Who are the mentors?

The clinical training is undertaken under the full supervision of Professor Cemal Ucer and mentors with many years of experience. The role of the clinical mentor and the structured mentoring process is crucial for developing full competence in implant dentistry.

What implant systems are used during clinical training?

The Certificate course is taught in the most generic form possible, with reference to the most evidence-based and proven implant systems. At the Mentee School, the Straumann® system is used as it is highly reputable and one of the most researched and evidence-based systems available. This improves consistency, reliability, success and general support for the learners.

Where does the training take place?

As education and training should take place in a dedicated environment conducive to learning, the MDIC course and clinical training take place in one of the most advanced and purpose-built dental implant hospitals in Europe. The ICE Hospital houses the ICE Postgraduate Institute & Mentee School and the ICE National Reference Centre for Digital Dentistry.

What else does the course cover?

Students are trained to use a full digital work flow using extra and intramural digital scanning, coDiagnostiX™ surgical guide design and 3D printing, as well as real-time Navident dynamic navigation technology.

Where is ICE Postgraduate Institute & Hospital Based?

The hospital is based in Salford Quays in Manchester near the world-renowned MediaCityUK. Salford Quays is directly connected to the M602 motorway and to Manchester city centre and the airport via the Metrolink. The ICE Hospital offers 80 private car parking spaces free of charge.
